I wanted something unique in that spot and since my love affair with mason jars continues, I decided to make a pendant lamp with one. I used a similar procedure that I did for the Anthropologie inspired lamp. Here are the things you will need for this project.
I always forget something when I’m taking the things-you-will-need pictures. I sprayed painted the white parts of the pendant with Rusteoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze but I realized later that I really didn’t need to because you can’t see them.
It is much easier if you get a metal drill bit the circumference of the socket.
I didn’t have one so Ijiggered it got creative.
I didn’t have one so I
I know, it looks sloppy. But you can’t tell once it’s put together. See?!
Once this part is done, install the pendant following package instructions. Put in a lightbulb, then screw on the jar.
Now I need your help. With or without curtains?
Won't you please leave me a Sunny Note letting me know which one you think looks best? I'll let you know what I decide on a future post.

When working over a kitchen sink, be sure to cover the drain (especially if there's a garbage disposal). I didn't and now there's a screw stuck in the garbage disposal.

Update (06/30/10):
Just wanted to let yall know that I've decided to take the little curtain off. I think it showcases the lamp more. In the future, I want to perhaps put a bamboo curtain but for right now, it's naked!! Thank you all for your suggestions.
And btw, I had to have a plumber come out and take out the screw from the garbage disposal. I was not happy about that. So PLEASE follow my You-Can-Learn-a-Lot-from-a-Dummy-Tip!!!!

I like it both ways. That's a great idea for a light fixture. It looks really pretty hanging there.
I LOVE the light! I've been holding on to a few jars (not mason but still cute) trying to figure out what to do with them. I just might have to turn them into pendant lights. And I was in favor of the curtains (because I think they're beautiful) UNTIL I saw the window without them. I say definitely NO curtains.
oh wow, i love this!!1 it is so pretty. old mason jars are one of my favorites
I like this! And definitely WITHOUT curtains, in my opinion. :-)
I love this idea! Wish I hadn't have just used all my mason jars for canning now lol. Found you thru Someday Crafts.

Your light turned out great! I love how you used the mason jar, the color is just perfect!
Lovely! I think it looks naked without the curtain though. Found through Someday Crafts
I like the one with just the curtain and the light, it seems a little too busy with the swag.
Great idea though.
Love your light! How creative!!! I love the old-fashioned look of it!! Nice job!!!

That is so cool!
I think it looks good either way, but if I had to choose, I'd say keep the curtain.
I REALLY like this!

So funny, I just did this too! And right above my sink too.
I'm loving it without the curtains and the wreath.
It looks fantastic!
This is super cute!

This is a great idea! I love it! I can see it on my front porch or my mother-in-law's screened in back porch. You could make a cluster like a chandelier hanging them at different heights! You could also frost the jar too!
This looks great! Thanks for sharing such an awesome idea!!!
That is sooooo cute! I love mason jars too! I saw on a blog that you can make it into a soap dispenser.
Have a great day!

what an awesome idea! i am storing this in my memory file (even if it is slightly unreliable...). also, i love without the curtains- gorgeous! one day i hope to have a kitchen island and would love to hang these over it. wow!
Love this idea. I just threw out my yucky light fixture over the sink. I don't have anything to replace it, but couldn't stand it anymore. I might try this. I actually like it both with and without the curtain. What about using the curtain in the winter to cozy it up and leave it off for the summer?
I like it without the curtains I think it would be cute if you had some bamboo shades if you HAD to have some though. Sometimes you need some privacy.
I like it with the curtains, although without makes the pendant light way more of a feature.
Great idea. Came from Strut your Stuff.
Come by my blog sometime. Love making new blogging friends!

Awesome. Creative. Oh, and did I say awesome?
I ABSOLUTELY adore this idea!!! LOVE IT! Brilliant! Probably the coolest pendant light I have ever seen! I featured it earlier today at somedaycrafts.blogspot.com! Grab my "featured" button.
I love that idea! Maybe try a shorter valance in white so you can see the black cord? It looks great!
I really like this - so cute and creative! Great job!
I really love it without the curtin, you can see the lamp itself more visible with all the details.
Soooo beautiful and creative, as all your jobs.
Congratulation!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my gosh, LOVE this! I have to make one for myself!
Ooooooh I love this so much! Coming over from the Shabby Chic Cottage and a happy new follower!

Love it! I also love the Pottery Barn ones they have with several jars hanging. THought about my craft room, but love it above the kitchen sink!
i have a clear hobnail jar that would be perfect! Thanks for the inspiration and sharing!
This is one of the GREATEST things I've seen in blogland! I MUST do this above my kitchen sink! Thanks for sharing!
HMmm...that is tough. I like the one without the curtain b/c you can see the pendant so clearly and the area just looks crisp and clean.... but I do like your curtains.
Thanks for sharing!
I love it! Without the curtain, your light shines!! - Karen
This is so charming! I love the new look -- great idea!
That was a great idea. I would say it depends if you want the top of the mason jar to show or not. With the curtains it looks like you can't see it without you can. That really is a unique lamp and I love it. Great u post.
wonderful project ... i like it best with the curtains!
Very, very creative and I like it without the valance.
You should make these and sell them on Etsy.com!! EXCELLENT!
I love the colors in the curtain. I would definitely keep it. The lamp is so cool. It is perfect for that spot.
great idea - i'd lose the curtains :D
So Unique!
Wishing you a Happy Alphabe-Thursday!
LOLA:)
PS Mine this week is HERE. Hope you can join me!
What a clever idea!! I like it with the curtains.
Oh wow, what a totally, totally unique idea!
I love this lamp.
Definitely sending this link around to friends!
Thanks for linking up to Alphabe-Thursday this week!
I totally love this unbelievable idea!
A+
Such a crafty idea...very cool post...Thanks...Peace and blessings
Love it! I need one of those in my house. Pottery Barn has something like it..
Oh that is a tough one. I like the simplicity without the curtains but I also think it looks fine with them! It is a GREAT lamp! I love what you did.
to be truthful--I really loved your swag. but I also LOVE that you made a lamp out of a blue mason jar. Maybe put it somewhere else.
Susan
it looks awesome.....
Love your kitchen window! And what a great idea for a light fixture. :o)
Blessings & Aloha!
WITHOUT~love the sleek look...
But, when you get tired of that way, put up some little cafe ones... halfway up. It will still let the sweet little jar light show too.
Love what you shared this week and I'm a new follower...
cool idea and really homey! I like it without the curtain! Love the open look.
I am featuring this idea on crazydomestic.com tomorrow! Thanks for the inspiration!
Steph
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! And so simple!! Also, I'm glad to see you with without on the curtains - I think it highlights the lamp so much better! Thanks for sharing this link!
I love old Mason Jars and this is such a cute way to display one! Much better than the old one. Looks great!!
That is the cutest kitchen light I've ever seen! I think I like it without the curtains. I'm putting this idea in my "house file", I'm going to be looking for a house to buy in just a few months and I'm starting a file of all the inspirational projects like yours that I might want to try in my own home!
Tania
I love love love love love this! I am crazy about mason jars right now too. I have a terrible light fixture over my sink and I think this would be the perfect replacement! Thank you.
This is such a great project! I actually just scored some blue mason jars this weekend at the flea market to make into lanterns. Thanks for sharing.

LOVE LOVE LOVE This idea!!! I want to do this with a whole bunch of them and turn it into a CHANDELIER in my boys room!! so fun! thanks for sharing and commenting <3
Super cute! I definitely think it's better with the curtains but maybe shorten them! I think if there were more of a gap between the bottom of the curtains & the light it would stand out even more. Love the turquoise glass though!
I love it! And I like it better w/o the curtain. Super cute!
Looks great, love the idea!
I love this -- so cute! The only change I might make to the fixture is to drill (jigger?) some holes in the jar lid. This will allow heat to escape, rather than build up inside the jar, which could shorten the life of the lamp. Great project!
I like your jar light. and I like it without the curtain too.
good job
Pat
very cute! i prefer it without the valance as it looks too busy...but another idea might be using a tension rod (they make them in orb & other colors now)between your cabinets along with rings to hang a narrow panels of curtains on each side. by hanging btwn the cabinets, they can be pushed aside and you'll still have the full window view. just a thought. found you via fji sns#68!
judi
LOVE it!! I think I might just have to copy this! Stopped by from Funky Junk.
I don't have a single curtain in my house ~ so I'd vote for no valance ~ but it definitely is a personal preference. Love that light~

I too love mason jars. Reminds me of my grandma and her home canning. The blue in the old Ball jars is to die for. I loved the look with your valance but it looks good without it too. Great job!

It is very simple. And it's simplicity is the main reason why I liked this so much.
This is brilliant!! LOVE this idea!!
I love this! I like it best without the curtains. It is very simple and allows the light to "shine." :)
why didn't i see this before i told husband to buy a crappy looking light to just fit over my sink???? i wanted something like this or a colander and didn't think of a mason jar!!!!!!!!!! *slaps forehead* next yr i will see if i can break the one we have and tell him hey i got an idea!!!! ;) i LOVE THIS!!!!!
Your mason jar light is awesome! I linked this to my pendant lights post too today, well done!
So funny, I collect Mason jars too from our spaghetti sauces! Newman's Own, Classico, and Barilla are my favorites. This is a great idea you have! I like it with out the curtains, and also if you could get more electrical wire up there, two more on the sides (but higher than the middle one) would be cute and add more light. So what did you end up with since this was over a year ago??
I like the lighting hanging there...and like the simplicity...I like it.
