Craigslist Motherload and a Home Tour

When looking through craigslist, nothing excites me more than seeing a post that reads “Moving Sale”.  Depending on an individual timeframe, people are anxious to sell and things will be listed for a very low price.  I once saw an ad for a coffee table without a price listed.  When I responded asking for the price, she wrote back $500.  I wrote back telling her my price range was more like $50, thank you anyway.  I didn’t think more about it and about week later she wrote back stating she needed it to go and if I still wanted it, she’d let it go for $50.  Now, that’s not the norm, but it is an example of why my love for moving sales.

Last week, I was looking through my “regulars”.  My “regulars” on CL are Pottery Barn, upholstered chair, Restoration Hardware, and Ballard, to name a few.  I came across a moving sale ad that sparked my interest.   It was what I call the CL MOTHERLOAD!!! This is when I find a moving sale where the seller’s d├ęcor matches my taste.  Where the pieces they are selling would be exactly something I’d buy.  This can be dangerous for me, but I’ve learned to control myself (sure I have).  (It’s a good thing credit cards can’t be used.)

I contacted the seller (we’ll call him Mr. X) about one particular piece and after I saw all the great pieces he had for sale, I asked him if I could photograph them for my blog. He was very gracious and agreed.

However, as soon as I got there and saw Mr. X’s home, I knew my post would take a different twist.  Mr. X’s home is a 1925, 2,400 sq. ft., original Florida pine floor gem.

The staircase leads to the bedrooms.  I bet there’s a clawfoot tub up in the master bath.  I didn’t ask to take pictures of the upstairs.  I felt like Mr. X (and his family) were patient enough with a stranger shooting pictures of their home.

Oh yeah, I did take pictures of my favorite pieces from CL.

I was so bummed I didn’t contact Mr. X sooner about this table and chairs.  He ended up selling it for -are you ready for this? - $60 bucks!!

Are you wondering if I even bought anything?  Or did I just show up and snapped away.  I am ballsy, but not that ballsy.  This is what I contacted Mr. X about in the first place.  See the little garden stool on the right?

This is where they live in my home.

Special thanks to Mr. X and his family for letting me intrude in their lives for a little sneak peak of their home.

Wow, what a great home. I love how they have sparkling alien visitors over for lunch sometimes…I do that too on occasion.

I think you got a good buy.

Oh what a beautiful home! I wish I had the luck you do on CL. I just haven't been able to find great stuff at great prices around here.

Sweet! What a fun CL visit you had. I never thought to search CL for brand names, but I'll add that to my search saves. I also love the moving sales for the same reason as you, and I've started getting kids clothes in lots off of CL, instead of searching for garage sales. It saves time when you've got 3 kiddos!

Hi Janet, Thanks for visiting my blog so that I could find yours. I feel like you are a kindred spirit--I grew up in Florida, I have 3 sons, & I do a Pottery Barn search every day on my local classified ad website! Ha! So much in common. Love the blog & your home.

Warmly, Michelle

That really is the motherload. So many things I'd love to take home with me. I need to start searching by brand - that's a good idea.
