Oh, For The Love of Captain Underpants!

In one of my Freecycle runs, I came across children’s books.  One of the books was Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets.  SKB #1 devoured the book!  I couldn’t believe he had read it from cover to cover.  SKB #1 REALLY disliked reading so when I saw his interest in a book enough to read it, I immediately went looking for more.  When I found out it was a series, it was like hitting a Reading Rainbow jackpot!

I was so happy that he wanted to read, I could have bought him 20,000 of them.  To my astonishment, while reading the reviews, not every parent shares the love I have for the series of a little bit, kind of, gross books.  Ok, so there are characters like Professor Poopypants, Bionic Booger Boy, and Wicked Wedgie Woman but HE’S READING.  The negative reviews pointed out how there are other types of books geared for boys that didn’t use such offensive words.  They are absolutely right.  If their children want to read them, hurray for them.  My son?  He rather read about nasty nostril nuggets.  (I could go on a tangent here about how everyone’s different and everyone parents differently depending on what works best for their children, etc.  But I won’t.  Let’s do pictures instead, shall we?)

SKB #3 likes them too.

It’s inspired a love of reading for himself and to his brothers and I am grateful for both.

So to Captain Underpants naysayers I say:

For the love of Captain Underpants, lighten up!!I

Note:
I’m using this post as a Togetherness sounding board to link to You Capture’s theme this week.  It’s suiting since it shows the “togetherness” the books are binging them.

Very glad you blooged today even though you did not think you were going to be able to. Even more grateful the storm never really happend! It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside seeing SKB#1 reading to his brothers (love it)! Hopefully they will all find reading a "fun" activity and you have started them on a path that will last a lifetime.

I remember those books! How fun. And I say, if it gets them to read more then go for it. My kids turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. They don't walk around picking their nose or anything. Yeah, the books are a little gross but it's humor for them. And the best part is he's reading to his brothers.

You are a great MOMMY! You know what is best for your boy and if that is what it takes, then go for it! I think parents that adapt to their childrens interests are so much more successful in the long run! :D

I'm not a fan of Capt Underpants books but I am a fan of parents doing what works best for them and therefore "Hurray Capt Underpants" for your SKBs. When I headed for your post I thought what an advantage you had for a Togetherness theme with your three SKBs and when I saw the pics of you and SKB#1 and just two of the boys in another, I was so impressed! They're all truly beautiful and wonderful Togetherness photos! Nice job!

Beautiful Togetherness pictures. The 3 brothers reading TOGETHER, that is very nice of you Mamma Yanet, Bless your and their heart, teaching them reading is a wonderful way to raise their culture.
Now is fun, in the future they will see the reward.
Pray always be like this, reading and staying FOREVER TOGETHER.

Very cute shots of the boys.

Whatever gets your boys to read is great. I haven't read any of these books, but would totally buy them if my son wanted to read them.

I am just seeing this post. Captain Underpants is a hero in our home too. And to those who oppose, its intended for BOYS! (Who themselves are gross, disgusting, dirty little buggers who love to talk about those things as much as you'll let them.) My oldest has collected quite a few and now my 5 year old is very interested as well and I will find him "reading" to himself.
